I make my living knowing about them and I was unable to answer all the questions at a great quiz from the PBS Frontline program Secret History of The Credit Card at Credit Card Quiz. Take the quiz and see how much you do or don’t know about universal default, and other credit card issues. Then read this article for more dirty little secrets this great PBS special offered. Here are a few appetizers:

UNIVERSAL DEFAULT - did you know the credit card company can raise your interest rate if you are late on ANY payment? I don’t mean late just to the credit card but to ANYBODY! Be late on your phone bill, car, house… ANYTHING. Or if in the eyes of a creditor you simply have to much outstanding credit, all bets are off regardless of whatever interest rate you signed up for.

The logic is simple. The industry believes it is within its rights to protect its interest in a more risky unsecured loan venture. Therefore, it is not unreasonable to raise rates if it has reason to think risk of being repaid has changed. And as a lender, the creditor has every right to view your credit file any time it wants… all of your file and not just its own payment history.

MINIMUM NOTICE CHANGES - If the above is not bad enough, consider the consumer with on time payments every month on everything. No problem, right? WRONG! Buried within the contract (that contract law attorneys admit they have great difficulty interpreting), is a clause that allows the company to change your interest rate “at any time, for any reason, as long as the holder is given 15 days’ notice.” That’s right. They can change their mind AFTER you make a purchase at 6.5% (for example) and any former agreements are null and void. How can a purchase price be changed after the sale? No other industry can do this but the credit card company.

USURY OR NOT - According to Frontline, “There is no federal limit on the interest rate a credit card company can charge.” In fact an interest rate of 35% is not unheard of. This is because in the 1980s South Dakota and Delaware eliminated the cap on usury laws which is what constitutes the maximum allowable interest to be charged. Have you ever noticed the return address on your credit card statement? Chances are it is Delaware or South Dakota. Gee, I wonder why.

DEADBEATS and REVOLVERS - Deadbeat use to mean someone not taking responsible action. This is not true in the upside down credit industry. In credit card bill jargon, “Deadbeats” pay their balances off in full every month. They are deadbeats because the industry receives very little profit off of these responsible consumers. On the other hand, “Revolvers” roll credit card balances over month to month and never pay in full. This is the ideal customer because of the profit generated. Then there are “Rate Surfers” or “Gamers” who shift usage between credit cards based upon interest rates.

FEES - Again quoting Frontline, “In 1996, the U.S. Supreme Court in Smiley vs. Citibank lifted the existing restrictions on late penalty fees. This means simply, there is no limit on the amount a credit card company can charge a cardholder for being even an hour late with a payment.” But this has opened a Pandora’s box for not only late fees, but over the limit fees and bad check fees as well. A lawyer who worked on the Smiley case says he believes penalty fees which use to be $5 or $10 could rise to $50 in another year. Now the consumer not only must contend with a higher rate, but late fees as well. Additionally what if these fees put them over the limit creating still another fee. It is a never ending spiral towards bankruptcy.

MINIMUM PAYMENT - Consumers use to be required to pay 5% of the outstanding balance. But slick credit card marketers suggested implementing a 2% required minimum payment. This was advertised as consumer friendly with “easy low payments.” The truth is, the tactic allowed consumers to increase their debt because of the lower payment which in turn created more profit through higher debt over a longer time period.

Selected Senators and Congressman as well as other consumer credit advocates have tried fruitlessly to pass legislation to overcome some of these deficiencies. Unfortunately even banning college campus credit solicitation and simple disclosure on billing statements go down in defeat because of a very powerful credit lobby groups. Let your congress know how you would feel about a simple statement beneath the the amount of minimum payment stating something like, “With a minimum payment, your current debt will take xxx years to pay off and the cost to you in interest will be $xxx.”

When looking for omega-3 supplements, try to take those that come from smaller fish such as sardines and anchovies. Smaller fish are lower in the food chain so they don’t have as much toxins in them as large fish.

Supplement #3: A Good Set Of Multivitamins

A good selection of vitamins from a high quality multivitamin helps the body detox, and boosts your immune system function and overall health. However there is such a wide variety of multivitamin supplements out there, and they vary wildly with prices and of course with quality.

The is especially true in Multi-vitamin forumlations.

It is possible to make a multi-vitamin appear very complete (look good on the label) yet very cheap - and of course POOR QUALITY.

Here is how:

* Choose less absorbable ingredients (that look the same on the label?) for example, a quality ingredient like Magnesium Aspartate has a high absorbability of 58%, but a low quality one like Magnesium Oxide ? 5%! more than 11x less? but hey? most consumers can’t tell the difference!

BTW a good multi vitamin blend does not cost 11x more than a lousy one, so its certainly a good idea to go with the best ones!

* Make low quality tablets/capsules by packing them with filler and compressing them so that they have low density of nutrients (yet you can sell huge capsule numbers on the bottle front “640 capsules” and so on!). This has the added advantage that your capsules will never break apart giving an even higher appearance of quality!

* Use Synthetic additives. Natural beta carotene or vitamin E is not the same as synthetic ones because the natural one will be complete in all its forms. The way vitamins are intended to be. The multiple forms help you absorb the vitamin. The synthetic ones only look good on the labels but do nothing for your health.

There we have it, 3 ways to make a lousy multivitamin supplement. So if you see these telltale signs, stay away!

NOTE: Men should choose the Copper and Iron Free versions of any Multi vitamin because excess of those nutrients are not good for men.

Supplement #4: Zinc

Take the following quiz…

* Do you fall sick often (weak immune system)

* Do you have lower than normal testosterone (check your tricep skin fold with a body fat

measuring caliper, it should be 5mm or lower for men)

* Do you have a low sperm count?

* Do you have trouble gaining muscle or recovering from training?

* Do you have low appetite?

* Do you have a “fatty chest” if you are a guy? I.e. Man boobs?

If you have some of these difficulties, chances are you are deficient in zinc. Zinc helps you absorb just about every nutrient and is involved in more than 300 (known) enzyme and hormone functions!

You can use a zinc test solution of zinc sulfate to find out your zinc levels (take 1/8th a cup of zinc sulfate and put it in your mouth for 3-5 seconds) If you can swallow it after that as if it’s water, you have low zinc, if it tastes like metal and you spit it out immediately, you have good zinc levels. Don’t worry this is a totally safe test, it’s just some zinc ions dissolved in water?

Supplement with a good zinc supplement that uses Zinc Orotate and Zinc Aspartate as its ingredients instead of lower quality stuff like zinc oxide.

Supplement #5: Magnesium Take the following quiz…

* Do you have trouble falling asleep?

*Do you have poor sleep quality and feel un-rested when you wake up?

* Do you have high stress or consume large amounts of carbohydrates (these lower magnesium

levels)

* Do you do alot of exercise?

* Do you store fat easily when you eat starchy foods (insulin resistance)?

* Do you have muscle cramps often?

These are signs of magnesium deficiency, it’s very common so don’t feel bad! It’s not your fault. Low stomach acid, high stress and heavy exercise can all contribute to this situation.

When you have good magnesium levels, the main benefit is great sleep quality. This is the first thing I look at and suggest when a client complains of poor sleep quality. Supplement with magnesium aspartate or magnesium citrate for best results.

At the time of this writing there is a product selling at Clickbank which provides set of Binaural audios that helps to relieve stress and gain intense focus. Give your visitors content they can’t read anywhere else. I’m not saying all your content has to be 100% original, but a portion of your web site should have original information.

People will usually read information they haven’t read before.

4. Quizzes

Give your visitors a quiz or a series of trivia questions. Post the correct answers weekly on your web site. The people who participate will want to come back to your site to see

if they were right.

5. News

Supply news stories related to your web site topic. People want current and up-to-date news. If you can be their first source, they will become repeat visitors to your web site.

6. Jokes

Give your visitors a little humor now and then. Don’t be so serious; tell them a joke. If they associate your web site with being happy they will visit again and again.

7. Free Stuff

People love to get free stuff. List free stuff on your web site. It could be software, services, sample products, e-books etc. The freebies should be related to your web site topic. Keep the freebies coming and your visitors will return regulary.

8. Directories

Tell your subscribers about Web sites related to your web site topic. The web sites should be interesting and helpful. Become your readers web site directory and they will come back.

What is ITIL v3?

ITIL® stands for the IT Infrastructure Library.  It emerged during the 1980’s in the UK as a set of high level processes for providing consistent, low risk IT service and IT service management to an organisation.  The copyright is owned by the Office of Government Commerce [OGC (formerly known as CCTA)] and is covered in several publications from the British Standards Institution (BSI).

ITIL v2 was completely updated and released as ITIL v3 during May/June, 2007.  Based on ITIL v2 Service Support and Service Delivery publications, ITIL v3 now comprises the following 5 publications:

ITIL v3 Service Design

ITIL v3 Service Transition

ITIL v3 Service Operation

ITIL v3 Continual Service Improvement

ITIL v3 is designed around the concept of the Service Lifecycle – 5 phases - from Service Strategy through to Service Design, Transition and Operations with Continual Service Improvement ‘plugging into’ each of the main phases.  All the original ITIL v2 processes remain within ITIL v3, however there are some minor changes.  For example, Incident Management is now responsible for Major Incidents instead of Problem Management.

Naturally, new certification schemes have arisen to allow individuals to take examinations in ITIL v3.  One may qualify at Foundation, Practitioner or Service Diploma levels.  Those already qualified as ITIL v2 Service Managers (“Red Badge”) may take the ITIL Managers Bridging examination to become ITIL v3 Diploma certified.

ITIL v3 Take Up

At the time of writing – late 2008 – very few organisations are making to leap to implement or upgrade to ITIL v3.  There are many reasons for this:



The current economic crisis (lack of finances available)

Lack of appetite

Lack of current process maturity (ITIL v2)

Internal politics (culture)

Lack of ability/expertise in the market.
